Transitory Motion, print, 2021
These prints are an exploration of the inner working relationships between water, winds, and global heating; as well as line, colour, and direction. They recognise that our oceans are not still bodies of water; rather they play an active role in circulating nutrients and heat around the globe, as well as informing our weather patterns.
Starting around the equator, winds drive warm surface ocean currents towards the poles of the globe. As these currents travel, they begin to cool and evaporate; resulting in denser water with a higher salt content. This water naturally sinks down to the basins of our oceans, slowly distributing nutrients, oxygen, and heat around our globe. Eventually, these ocean currents warm again and rise back up, thus completing the natural cycle that takes around 1000 years.
The swings and swirls of these Circulations prints acknowledge our wind and ocean currents as the veins and lungs of our planet; distributing heat from the sun around the globe. These natural processes may be destabilised by humans generated emissions, which force higher temperatures. This is ultimately impacting our weather events - warmer oceans, which continue to evaporate, impact the humidity and temperature of our atmosphere, and so the warming cycle continues.
Notions of connectivity - cause and effect - are pivotal to this series. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Changes occurring in one system will always circulate to another.
